Denim is more than just a cotton fabric, It's one of the world’s most iconic fabrics. The speciality is in its own double warp-faced cotton-twill weave yarn.
The word “denim” comes from the French serge de Nimes, which refers to a particular type of fabric that was produced in Nimes, a town in France. Later Denim as we know it today originated in 1860, when Levi Strauss & Co., was making work pants out of a stiff canvas fabric and dyeing it in blue. It rapidly spread all over America and became famous. From then to now its evolution has been ongoing. During the 1950s, denim became linked to rebels, bikers, and juvenile delinquents like in films such as “The Wild One,” starring Marlon Brando. Fashion designers began experimenting with denim during the 1970s, but by the end of the 20th century, denim also had emerged as a luxury item.
We often think denim and jeans as the same but there are differences. Denim is a fabric. It is made of firm cotton in a twill weave and dyed with indigo. Jeans are a type of garment typically made from denim fabric and are characterised by double-stitching and rivets on the seams. Basically, all jeans are denim, but not all denim are jeans. The basic denim jean gets their unique character from their yarn, indigo dyestuff, weaving and design, and washes and technical finishes. There are types of denim like raw denim,100% cotton, washed, chambre, and selvedge denim. Denim Fabric thread count is dense threads that result in low thread counts, breathability is high, moisture wicking ability is high, stretchability is low to medium, wash care is flexible, and heat retention ability is medium. Denim is commonly used in Jeans, jackets, shirts, suits, skirts, hats, belts, shoes etc.
